Cordina sets sights on dream home title bout

-

WELSH boxer Joe Cordina admitted that a world title in Cardiff is the dream after opening the show ahead of Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko.

The 25-year-old looked impressive again as he fought for the second time in seven days after making his professional debut last weekend, seeing off Sergej Vib inside the first round at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Vib hit the canvas twice, the first was a combination of a left from the Welshman and perhaps a little trip but there was no doubt about the second.

The Welsh Wizard pinned his prey into the corner of the wing and unloaded an explosive flurry of shots putting the German down again.

Vib couldn’t beat the count and the exercise was complete.

Looking forward, the explosive super featherweight is taking inspiration from Saturday night’s headline act as he aims high.

Almost three years ago Joshua kicked off the undercard ahead of Froch v Groves II, now he’s the headline act in front of 90,000 fans and it’s a storyline Cordina quite likes the sound of.

“A big stage like this, I want to show what I’m made of and I want to showcase my talents to the world - what better stage to do it on?” Said Cordina.

“I saw a video Eddie Hearn (Joshua and Cordina’s promoter) posted and he was sat right here three years ago saying that Anthony could headline a show here in a couple of years - look where we are now.

“Hopefully, in a couple of years I’ll be fighting for a world title, maybe in Cardiff - that would be a dream come true.”

Elsewhere on the undercard, there were wins for Luke Campbell and Scott Quigg, who laboured to a unanimous decision victory over Romania’s Viorel Simion to edge closer to facing IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby.
