Port to welcome record number of cruise ships

-

A record number of cruise ships – including the most luxurious liner ever built – will sail into Holyhead this year.

The schedule for 2017 has been revealed with 44 cruise ships coming into the port town over the spring and summer.

This will see more than 20,000 passengers brought to Anglesey with a potential tourism windfall of more than £2m.

It is a 47% increase in the number of cruise ships and 60% increase on passenger numbers compared to 2016.

Ships will dock at the Orthios – formerly Anglesey Aluminium – berth as well as the refit berth, while the biggest boat due to dock, the Celebrity Silhouette, will be anchored in the outer harbour and passengers brought ashore by tender.

The list of ships due includes the Seven Seas Explorer – dubbed the world’s most luxurious ship – which is due to dock in June. It includes £10,000-a-night suites, extravagantly designed theatres and lounges, and 1,500 crew to serve 750 passengers.

Councillor Richard Dew said: “It’s great to see our annual cruise programme going from strength to strength.

“We’ll be welcoming more ships and more passengers than ever before during 2017, as Anglesey cements its position as Wales’ premier cruise port destination.

“It promises to be a great summer with an increase in the number of visitors.”
