Kirkton Park courts return to service

- Marjorie Kerr

West Lothian’s budding tennis players can fix their sights on Wimbledon thanks to newlyrevamped tennis courts in Bathgate.

The Kirkton Park tennis courts have undergone a £170,000 upgrade to replace the old blaes courts with an all-season tarmac surface, with new floodlighting and fencing also installed.

West Lothian Council leader John McGinty officially opened the new facility with representatives from the various organisations involved in funding the project.

They were joined by pupils from Boghall Primary, who took part in coaching organised by Tennis Scotland for the opening event.

The courts will provide a mix of public pay-and-play, organised activities through a tennis coach and club-led activities.

Members of the public can book slots on the courts at www. clubspark.lta.org.uk/ KirktonParkCommunityTennisCourts.

Councillor McGinty said:“The excellent new tennis courts at Kirkton Park will help provide more opportunities for local people of all ages to take part in tennis throughout the year, encouraging them to keep healthy in a fun way.

“This has been a real partnership project between the council, Kirkton Park Tennis Club, Sportscotland, Tennis Scotland and the Land Trust so I would like to thank everyone who helped deliver this excellent resource for the Bathgate community.”

Tennis club chairman Jean Jackson said:“We are thrilled with the newly refurbished courts.

“Our thanks go to all of the funders of this project as well as those who put in many hours of hard work to see its completion.”

Stewart Harris from Sportscotland said:“We are committed to investing in quality facilities as part of our drive towards developing a worldclass sporting system at all levels.

“We are delighted that this investment of £80,000 has helped to substantially upgrade the tennis facilities at Kirkton Park.”

Doc McKelvey from Tennis Scotland said:“It’s great to see the children from Boghall Primary enjoying the tennis and we look forward to seeing them and many other local families taking part over the months to come.”
