How they rated

- BY ANDREW GWILYM

LUKASZ FABIANSKI

Kept his side in it. Made fine saves from Lingard and twice from Lukaku. Authoritative in the air and as solid and reliable as ever.

KYLE NAUGHTON

Found the interchanging nature of Mata, Lingard and Sanchez too much to handle at times and caught out of position on several occasions. Improved after the break.

MIKE VAN DER HOORN

Rode his luck at times and his lack of pace was exposed at times by the movement of United’s front four, and had one nightmare moment. But made a number of timely interventions too.

FEDERICO FERNANDEZ

Will feel he could have done better in the lead up to the opener while Mata nearly punished another lapse shortly after the break. Made one outstanding challenge to deny Sanchez.

ALFIE MAWSON

Found Lukaku a handful in the early going and a deflection off his boot aided the Belgian’s opener, but - like his team - grew into the game. Got away with one big misjudgement late on.

MARTIN OLSSON

Had his hands full in the first half, but really got into it after the break, one lovely cross set up a chance for Abraham and so nearly picked out Ayew from another charge upfield.

NATHAN DYER

Like the Tottenham game, he was starved of service and made little impact. Gave up possession too easily, too often and was not a surprise to see him withdrawn at the break.

ANDY KING

Like Ki, King played both games for his country during the international break but seemed to suffer little after-effect. Covered so much ground and assured on the ball.

KI SUNG-YEUNG

Has been very good under Carvalhal but was miles off the pace here with the game seeming to pass him by. Often guilty of not tracking runners and can have no complaints at being withdrawn.

SAM CLUCAS

A difficult afternoon, put in his customary shift but got a little overexcited on rare forward forays, afternoon ended by injury.
