Concorde’s 50th: the world’s most successful supersonic airliner is now celebrated by a world first gold coin!

-

Britain has much to be proud of but one of our greatest achievements was the design and development of Concorde. Nothing else quite captured the imagination in the same way as this airliner that could fly at twice the speed of sound!

There were only ever two supersonic airliners - Concorde and the Russian Tu144 but Concorde flew higher and remained in service much longer, a testament to its quality and engineering.

Now, in 2019, we mark 50 years since Concorde’s first supersonic flight. A new gold coin has been produced and in tribute to the worlds first status of Concorde, the coin too, is a world’s first!

FOR A WORLD FIRST AIRCRAFT, A WORLD FIRST GOLD COIN

When Concorde first took to the skies fifty years ago, the world watched in awe as an exciting new era of faster-than-sound travel roared into life. Capable of travelling at twice the speed of sound, nothing came near Concorde for sheer style and innovation, and those who could afford to, clamoured for the chance to fly on the world’s fastest passenger jet, famously “arriving in New York before they had left London”.

With its sleek lines likened to a majestic white swan in flight, and delta wings replicating everyone’s idea of the perfect paper dart, Concorde was unmistakeable. Concorde flew higher and faster than any airliner then or since, cruising at an average of 1,320 mph, she cut trans-atlantic flight times in half. At 60,000 feet, you could even see the curvature of the Earth while sipping champagne in your seat!

Her final flight in 2003 marked the sad end to a great era but despite this she is still an icon of one of the greatest achievements ever in aviation.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT COINS IS STILL MINTED TODAY

First minted in Britain in 1817, the This world-first reverse-frosted gold quarter sovereign coin has been struck to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Concorde’s first supersonic flight. Only 4,999 have been minted. It is available now for the introductory price of just £99.99 (P&P included), but only until 31st December 2019 after which the price will be £199.99 (P&P included), subject to availability. There is a limit of one coin per household at the introductory price. sovereign was at one time or another legal tender in more than 30 territories worldwide.

Even today, mention of the word ‘sovereign’ evokes feelings of pride and security in most of us.

Although no longer a circulating coin, the sovereign is still struck for those interested in owning gold, and they have special tax status being exempt from VAT. These are coins that sit beyond the reach of the Chancellor!

A WORLD’S FIRST BUT FEWER THAN 1 IN 5,000 UK HOUSEHOLDS CAN OWN ONE

Never before has a reverse-frosted quarter sovereign coin been struck. Authorised by Gibraltar, and approved by both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful celebration - and a world first one at that - of Concorde.

Minted from solid 22 carat gold, the mintage is restricted to just 4,999 coins. This means that fewer than 1 in every 5,000 UK households can own one.

The coin may be returned within 60 days for a full refund. There is a strict limit of one coin per household, and this offer is limited to UK mainland households only. All applicants must be aged 18 or over.

Those interested in owning one of these world-first gold coins for under £100 may do so now by taking advantage of the introductory price being offered by Hattons of London. The coin is available for just £99.99 (P&P included) but only until 31st December 2019 after which the price will be £199.99 (P&P included) subject to availability.
