Morgan is ready to party now Tartan Army has sealed a place at Euro 24

Willie Morgan knows all about qualifying for a major tournament and was delighted Scotland achieved progression to Euro 2024 last Sunday evening without kicking a ball.

Morgan also knows first-hand how tough life at club level has been for Scott McTominay but is delighted that things have taken a turn for the better at international level for the Manchester United midfielder.

The former silky winger once roared the Old Trafford crowds in the 1970s and proudly represented Scotland on 26 occasions scoring four times.

As much as the game is different to the 1970s, Morgan still has that affinity for his home nation and hopes they don’t look out of place in Germany next summer.

He said: “I am delighted for Scotland for Steve Clarke. What a job he has done so far. I am always rooting for the Tartan Army and I cannot wait to watch them play in Germany at the Euros. The party will be immense.

“It takes all the pressure off now. They can just work at things and get ready for the tournament.

“Every player in the team works hard for the badge and they know their roles perfectly. There are no big-time players in the side – they work for one another and it has worked as results and performances show.

“I am pleased for Scott McTominay as he has not been in the team regularly at Manchester United, so to see him score goals and be a big player for Scotland is fantastic.”

The former Scotland cap still has a presence around football four decades on and has his own show on YouTube named The Willie Morgan Show, hosted by Callum McFadden.

And 28-year-old McFadden, from Greenock, has recently published his book Behind The Curtain Of The Beautiful Game. It features several Scottish football icons, including Morgan, Shaun Maloney and former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill.

Morgan was delighted he could contribute to the book.

He added: “It is wonderful to see the book published because Callum has worked very hard on it and I love working with him on my show.

“It was a pleasure to be included in the book and it certainly is a great insight into football behind the scenes.”

For author McFadden, it was a proud moment.

He said: “There’s so many characters within the game, particularly here in Scottish football with so many personalities and people who have achieved great things in the game – that doesn’t just include players and managers.

“It also includes referees such as Stuart Dougal who is in the book. We’ve had a lot of success as a small nation which is great to see.”
