Morton sorry for supporters after Caley Jags clash called off

- By Willie Dick SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Morton chiefs last night expressed sympathy with their supporters after the SPFL pulled the plug on yesterday’s Championship clash with Inverness Caley Thistle.

The sides were due to meet in a basement battle at Cappielow, but league officials called the fixture off on Friday afternoon on the advice of Police Scotland due to unprecedented levels of rain in parts of the country.

The cancellation came just two weeks after several Morton players were unable to reach Hampden for their clash with Queen’s Park due to flooding in the Greenock area.

Some fans were also caught up in the ensuing travel chaos and were offered refunds by Queen’s Park for pre-paid tickets.

A Morton spokesman said: “With weather warnings in place across much of the north and east of the country, Police Scotland have issued advice against travel which therefore raises safety concerns for the travelling side.

“While we are fully appreciative of the circumstances and the police advice not to travel, we have huge sympathy with our own supporters, who, just a fortnight ago, had to either battle the elements to get to Hampden or couldn’t get out of Inverclyde to make the game.

“This included one of our players who was unable to reach Hampden due to the weather.”

Meanwhile Inverness welcomed the postponement, posting on their website: “We would like to thank the league for this swift, pragmatic and commonsense decision.”

Morton and Caley remained locked at the bottom of the Championship table with just five points from eight matches.
