COVE RANGERS 2 CLYDE 3 PARTICK THISTLE 0 PETERHEAD 1

-

Cove suffered their second home league defeat in the SPFL, with two David Goodwillie penalties and an injury-time strike giving Clyde the points to lift them four clear of bottom club Forfar.

Goodwillie was too clever for Connor Scully in the area to win an 11th-minute penalty, which he calmly stroked into the bottom right corner to open the scoring.

Mitch Megginson returned to the starting line-up after injury and he was back on the scoresheet in the 27th minute with a fine solo goal.

Paul Hartley’s men then went in front in the 32nd minute and, once again, it was Megginson who found the net – the former Don unleashing a thumping right-foot shot high into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Goodwillie won and converted his second penalty of the game to equalise 11 minutes into the second period, having been fouled by Ryan Strachan.

With the clock ticking past the 90-minute mark, Clyde grabbed a dramatic winner. Mark Lamont, who only entered the field seconds earlier, fired home from the edge of the box with his right foot, to spark celebrations from the visitors.

Thistle suffered their first defeat in six games after Scott Brown’s goal was enough to give Peterhead the points at Firhill.

The Jags’ streak of five consecutive clean sheets came to an end on the half-hour when Joe Cardle’s pass was intercepted by Kieran Freeman. He found Brown and the visiting captain steered the ball into the corner of the net for what proved to be the winner.

Thistle dominated much of the opening period, finding joy with Ryan Williamson’s overlapping runs into the final third.

Cardle and Connor Murray linked up well to release Williamson for their best chance of the first half. The full-back released a powerful shot, which was parried by Joshua Rae, and the keeper did well to collect the rebound after Cardle met the ball on the volley.

Peterhead defended resolutely in the second half with Thistle afforded few chances in front of goal.

There was a penalty claim 10 minutes from time when Brian Graham was brought down in the box, but referee Kevin Graham deemed that no foul was committed.

The result sees Thistle slip to fourth in the table, while Peterhead climb into the top half.
