ELGIN CITY 0 QUEEN’S PARK 1 Deflection aids miserly Spiders in going clear

-

Queen’s moved two points clear at the top of League 2 and have yet to concede a league goal in four outings.

The Spiders had the better chances in the first half, with Ross Maclean firing a great opening over after robbing Elgin captain Euan Spark of the ball.

That came three minutes before Darren Lyon’s winning goal, a deflected effort from the edge of the box after Maclean cut it across from the right.

Elgin’s attacking threat was nullified after the break by a resolute Queen’s Park defence, with Peter Grant’s vital challenge on Kane Hester sparking penalty claims which ref Barry Cook waved aside.

Hester’s frustrations got the better of him in stoppage time and a tangle earned him a second booking and his second red card of the season already.

ANNAN 2 ALBION ROVERS 3

The visitors started strongly, with Nathan Flanagan’s shot saved in 13 minutes before Gabe Skeoch, Paul Allan and Callum Wilson all had shots saved by Annan keeper Jordan Pettigrew in the space of four minutes.

Annan’s Aaron Splaine saw his shot saved on 58 minutes before Rovers went ahead from a penalty when Callum Wilson was fouled in the box by Jordan Pettigrew and Lewis Baker netted.

With six minutes left, Russell Currie equalised with a powerful header.

In the 86th minute, Matthew Aitken fired Albion back into the lead from 12 yards and, not long after, he looked to have sealed this points when his free-kick hit the back of the net to make it 3-1.

But Annan stormed back and Maxwell Wright set up a grandstand finish late on when he headed his side’s second goal.

STRANRAER 2 COWDENBEATH 0

The hosts started the game on the front foot and a lovely bit of skill by Joao Victoria on the left saw the ball fired across goal. Ruari Paton got a touch before Thomas Orr touched home at the back post, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The opening goal came on 36 minutes.

Andy Stirling did well on the right and slotted the ball through to Orr, who managed to slot home from eight yards.

After the restart, Cowden thought they were level on the hour, only for Fleming to brilliantly deny Harvey Swann.

However, their chances of getting something from the game suffered a blow when Robbie Buchanan was shown a straight red for a poor tackle on Victoria.

The Stranraer man then secured the victory after cutting in from the left and smashing past Ross Sinclair.

BRECHIN 0 STIRLING ALB 5

The Binos opened the scoring after 21 minutes when Jack Leitch collected an Andy Ryan pass to blast the ball home.

City were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Gregor Jordan was red-carded for a last man challenge on Scott Roberts just outside the penaltybox with David Wilson stepping up to fire home the resultant free-kick.

Stirling made it 3-0 on 49 minutes when Andy Ryan headed home a Ross Mcgeachie cross and, nine minutes later, Roberts drilled home a right-foot drive from the edge of the box.

Declan Byrne completed the rout with a close-range finish in the 66th minute.

STENHOUSEMUIR 2 EDINBURGH CITY 0

The Warriors started well and Ryan Blair’s shot was blocked for a corner by Liam Henderson in the first minute.

Stenhousemuir keeper Paddy Martin was called into action in the 35th minute, pushing a Danny Handling shot around the post.

The hosts led straight after the restart when Greig Spence slotted home.

In the 68th minute, the Warriors were awarded a penalty after Tommy Muir was tripped by Liam Henderson and Spence stepped up to convert the spot-kick to seal the victory.
