The Sunday Post (Dundee)

Going out Restaurant of the week

The Spiritualist, 62 Miller St, Glasgow

-

Location

In the heart of Glasgow’s trendy Merchant City, a short walk from Glasgow’s main train stations and most bus routes. Easy to find.

First impressions

It’s a hip and stylish haunt. High ceilings, trendy furniture, a conservatory which looks like a garden. What’s not to like? It’s busy, too, which is always a good start – so book in advance, especially on weekends.

Service

Warm and friendly. Almost too efficient as we’re asked at least twice for our drinks order after we’ve placed it. Lovely waiting staff, nothing seems to be a problem.

Menu

The Spiritualist’s menu is small, but has something to suit all tastes. The starters all appeal, from Goan prawn curry and grilled halibut to seared scallops and soy-braised pork belly. You’ll be spoilt for choice for mains. Vegetarians only have one main option, though.

Taste

We opt for the steak – one fillet and one sirloin. Both are cooked to perfection and bursting with flavour. Served with fries in a bucket and peppercorn sauce or red wine jus, they hit the spot. The salt and chilli mushrooms on the side are the best we’ve ever had and the purple sprouting broccoli brightens up the plate. The chocolate and peanut butter tart is big enough for two – but so delicious you won’t want to share!

Ambience

Friendly and relaxed. Clearly one of the places to be on a Saturday night.

Something special

Cocktails – which we can safely say look just as nice as they taste. The Snapplepop, still foaming bubbles when it arrives on the table, is certainly a talking point.

Price

At just over £140 for two for mains and desserts (with a bottle of wine and a few cocktails) it’s pricey.

Toilets

Spotless and spacious.

Try the rhubarb flight for afters. With three desserts in one, it’s a pudding and a half! As well as gin jelly, there’s rhubarb pavlova and a rhubarb gin cocktail.
