HOGG IS THE HERO AS WARRIORS JUST CLINCH IT

-

Wobbly Warriors shook off their jitters to grab a crucial bonus-point victory in Galway.

Stuart Hogg emerged as the hero as he thumped over the clinching drop-goal six minutes from time.

The visitors had produced the perfect start.

With just 65 seconds on the clock they created a superb try for winger Tommy Seymour.

Hogg sent a chip towards the line – and Seymour was quickest to respond as the markers struggled to backtrack.

Pete Horne’s wide-angled conversion drifted wide.

Connacht hit back with power and they reduced the leeway with a Jack Carty penalty from close range.

There was an even bigger setback for the Warriors in the 15th minute. A clever lob by Carty was perfectly weighted for Cian Kelleher to gather and score. Carty added the extras.

Glasgow wasted no time in repairing the damage, as hooker George Turner scuttled through after scooping up a loose ball.

Horne’s kick edged the visitors back in front – only to see Finlay Bealham snatch a second touchdown for the hosts, goaled by Carty.

Jonny Gray claimed a burrowing score at the other end, however TV replays were inconclusive. But there was no debate three minutes later as Ryanwilson spiralled over.

The end-to -end action continued with Carty slotting two penalties in quick succession to give his side a six-point interval lead.

And the stand-off struck again immediately after the restart to make the task of the Scots even harder.

Warriors boss Dave Rennie made wholesale bench changes in a bid to alter the pattern of the match.

However, their plight worsened on the hour mark as playmaker Adam Hastings was yellow-carded for a high challenge. But his absence acted as a spur and sub Adam Ashe was driven over for a try – Hogg converting to narrow the gap to two.

Hogg then slotted his dropgoal to regain the lead and set up a tense finale. Glasgow held on despite a Craig Ronaldson penalty in stoppage-time hitting the post.
