OSCAR winner Rachel Shenton is set to start filming the second series of TV show All Creatures Great and Small within the next few weeks.

The classic Channel 5 veterinary drama will see actress Rachel, from Caverswall, return as Helen Alderson, an independent local farmer’s daughter who helps to manage the family farm and care for her younger sister.

The part was played by Carol Drinkwater in the original BBC TV series.

Speaking during the filming of the first series Rachel, aged 33, said: “Set in the Yorkshire Dales and working with animals every day is a dream for me.

“The backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales is almost a character in itself.

“The cast and crew are all brilliant, we’re having such a great time. I don’t remember the original series myself, but my mum and family are huge fans. I love the books, so I’m super excited to bring it to life again.”

The original All Creatures Great and Small, starring Christopher Timothy as vet James Herriot, ran for seven seasons and 90 episodes from 1977 to 1990 on BBC1.

Season two of the new series will pay tribute to the late Dame Diana Rigg, who died in September last year.

She played Mrs Pumphrey, the owner of dog Tricki-woo, in series one.

It is not yet known when the second series will be screened.

Series one is available to watch on My5.

POLICE are investigating after a pregnant teenage mum was grabbed by two men in an ‘attempted mugging’.

The 19-year-old victim was with a toddler, a friend and her child when they were approached by the suspects as they walked past Matalan in Tunstall on their way to Asda.

It is then reported that the pair grabbed at her coat before leaving empty-handed.

Officers confirmed they were aware of the incident, which happened at around 4pm on Friday.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “We were called on Friday to reports that two Asian men approached a 19-year-old girl and her friend and pulled at her coat. Nothing was stolen.”
