Making fans Shout, Lulu thrills festival

- By Paul Drury

LULU helped thousands of music fans turn back time last night when she owned the stage at the Rewind Festival. The Glasgow-born singer, draped in a colourful poncho, defied her 70 years to belt out a string of her hits at the event in the grounds of Scone Palace, Perthshire. Lulu’s performance last night was merely a warm-up for her 35-date On Fire UK tour, due to get under way in September. She said: ‘We’ll be playing here, there and everywhere, so I invite fans old and new to come along and share a great night, covering my six decades in music.’ Her hitspacked show includes The Man Who Sold The World – which she famously recorded with David Bowie – Relight My Fire, To Sir With Love and her 1964 debut smash Shout. It is now 55 years since Shout was released, meaning the girl from Dennistoun’s career has outlasted those of many of her contemporaries from the 1960s. The fans who were gathered for the Rewind Festival were noticeably older – and less sunburned – than the 150,000 who attended last weekend’s TRNSMT music event in Glasgow. But despite a soggy start to day one, Rewind managed to reprise some of the most popular anthems of the 1970s and 80s. Other acts gracing the main stage included Scotland’s Eddi Reader and Paul Young, best known for 1985’s Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home). Another impressive line-up is due to take to the stage today, including Belinda Carlisle, Lisa Stansfield, The Stranglers, Midge Ure, Leo Sayer and Bryan Ferry.
