Must not be exposed as a foetus to nicotine, alcohol, drug misuse or domestic violence and abuse during pregnancy
Must be breast-fed during the first 6-8 weeks after birth
Must have immunisations completed by relevant ages
Must be registered with a dentist and receive regular check-ups Must be free of dental decay Must receive adequate and appropriate nutrition
Must get consistent love and emotional warmth in a natural or placement family Must feel loved and trusted Must be mostly happy and satisfied with life
Emotional and developmental needs must not be neglected
Must be free from physical neglect by parents or carers
Must get regular praise and encouragement
Must not suffer exposure to persistent emotional abuse within the home
Must not be exposed to sexual abuse or exploitation
Must have a well developed sense of selfesteem and self-respect
Must have a well developed sense of identity and belonging Must have the resilience to cope with adverse circumstances at home (e.g. parental separation, bereavement)
Must be optimistic and realistic as to what he or she can achieve
Must have good relationships with family and friends
Must not experience bullying or discrimination by peers or adults at school or in the local community
Must not have a history of self-harm or attempted suicide
Must not misuse alcohol, nicotine, drugs and other harmful substances

Must adopt safe practices and act responsibly in potentially high-risk situations, (e.g. when using tools, participating in physical contact sports and other sports involving risk of physical harm; confronted by substance misuse within their network of friends)
