Erwin left subdued by result on Tayside

- By Ewing Grahame

MOTHERWELL goal hero Lee Erwin’s joy at Rugby Park was short-lived last night after he discovered that Ross County had won at Tannadice to remain three points in front of them.

Even so, the 21-year-old is convinced that more displays of the quality on show here will soon see them climb out of the play-off position after he netted the winner.

‘It felt great until we found out Ross County got a result as well, so that is a bit of a blow,’ he said.

‘But at least we got the three points. I think we dominated the game and it was a good performance.

‘For my goal, I beat two players and then I ran out of legs, so I just hit it. I had been cramping up since about 70 minutes in.

‘I have been missing some sitters, so it was good to get a goal and, hopefully, I can get a few more before the end of the season.

‘The manager has told me I’m doing all the right things but I need to get into the box more. Thankfully, today it came off for me.’

Manager Ian Baraclough saluted the delirious travelling fans with some Ronny Deilaesque fist-pumping at full time and hopes to repeat the feat when St Mirren come to Fir Park on Tuesday.

‘It means the world — it means absolutely everything,’ he said. ‘We’ve not had a great deal to celebrate this season and our fans played their part yet again today by turning out in numbers.

‘They were noisy and backed the team and we’ve responded. And, of course, I enjoy celebrating!

‘We’ve now taken 10 points out of the last 15 and, if you’re taking two points out of every three, then you’re on the up, aren’t you?’

New Kilmarnock manager Gary Locke conceded that his side’s top-six ambitions have all but vanished.

‘I think the top six is going to be really difficult now,’ he said. ‘We need to make sure we bounce back next week.’
