From golf to foodie feasts, Fairmont St Andrews has lots of Father’s Day treats, writes Alison Gray

- For golfing dads: For foodie dads:

With Father’s Day just over a week away what can you give the man who has everything, particularly as he already has you as his child? Perhaps an experience has greater value in these post-covid times, rather than yet more stuff. Unless of course he is desperate for a Big Green Egg barbecue or an upgrade on his strimmer.

A weekend away at the Fairmont in St Andrews is one way to really pamper pater, especially if the rest of the family get to tag along too. So what’s on offer?

As you might expect this is where the 520-acre five star Fairmont comes into its own with golfing packages for dads who are most definitely clubbable. Why not treat him and his bestie to 18 Holes for Two on either the Torrance or the Kittocks – the Fairmont’s championship golf courses. Valid for 12 months, the voucher is available for £125 during off-peak season (1 November-30 April) or £250 during peak season (1 May-31 October). Our fairway fan got a chance to play the Kittocks on a benign day, reporting that this was just as well as the course was challenging enough. However the spectacular views, especially on the back nine holes returning towards St Andrews rewarded the effort needed to take on the long, tricky course. Pay particular attention to the 17th hole, an exceptional par four running along the top of the cliffs; part of the fairway features a steep drop-off to the sea below. The hole is apparently a big favourite with Sam Torrance, who was involved with the course design.

Would he hate to admit it, but could dad do with a few tips to improve that errant swing? Sign him up for a 60-minute golf lesson with a PGA pro. During this session he’ll receive instruction tailored to his skill level and goals. Vouchers are valid for six months and bookings must be made in advance subject to availability. Available for £60. Or go one step further and head out for a nine hole golf lesson with a PGA pro (£135, voucher valid for six months). However the ultimate deal might be the Stay and Play package which includes B&B for two guests, access to the spa and leisure facilities plus a round of golf per person on Kittocks or Torrance. Prices start from £395 per room (May) and £659 per room (June-september).
