#NATIONALANTHEM

Ministers have appeared to support calls from a Tory MP to have the BBC play the UK national anthem more. Tory MP Andrew Rosindell had told MPS the national broadcaster should play the anthem at the end of their programming every day.

@selzero said: “Bad idea. Unless they change the anthem to be one about democracy and human rights, not subservience to aristocracy.”

@leftstance posted: “The UK is in decline and economic shock. It’s Covid death toll is the longstanding embarrassment of Europe. The political answer? Play the national anthem at the end of the broadcasting day.”

@tonymac5 commented: “If the national anthem wasn't a funereal dirge with the musical energy of a longdead beached whale and obsequious lyrics exhorting us to tug our forelocks to the superior genes of the royal family, I might stand up and join in.”

@Greataunty1 remarked: "I have no issue with this as long as BBC Wales plays Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and BBC Scotland plays Flower of Scotland.”

@Strichy2 stated: “I love my country, but what's next? Are you going to get kids standing up in class, pledging allegiance to the flag. This isn't America.”

@LITTLETED suggested: “How about God Save the Queen at then end of cinema viewings? But this time lock the doors to stop the audience escaping.”

@adammc45_mark said: “Give me five – I need to check which country, century and decade we are in. I’ve seen this in place in Russia on TV and a few other such countries. I’ve no issue with the national anthem. However, this reinforcing of our new-found sovereignty, smells of fear or hypocrisy.”

@glasgowswestend wondered: “Will we be expected to stand up in our living rooms when it plays? We could create a dance and everyone put it on Tiktok.”

@sootie1955 suggested: “People who need to stand in front of flags and sing meaningless songs have a major identity problem. It’s like they need to feel wanted.”

@amrakunj added: “I am willing to listen to the national anthem on BBC every evening as long as each and every member of Her Majesty’s government is filmed live, standing up and singing it every evening in House of Commons.”
