Who’s next in line to play the Doctor? Odds shorten on Skyfall actor Whishaw

- CLAIRE Gardner Skyfall

Ben Whishaw has been tipped as favourite to replace Matt Smith as the new Doctor Who.

Bookmakers William Hill have slashed the odds for the actor, who recently played Q in the new James Bond film, Skyfall, from 12-1 to 8-1.

Others in the betting include actor Martin Freeman at 16-1, the same odds as the new Doctor Who being a woman – Billie Piper.

Scots actor ewan McGregor comes in at 25-1 with Simon Cowell an outsider at 250-1.

A flurry of betting took place after Matt Smith announced yesterday he was leaving the show. He is expected to bow out in the Christmas special when he will be replaced by a new incarnation of the time lord.

Smith, who has been in the role since 2010, said it had been “an honour” to play the part.

He said: “Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show.

“I’m incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver DoctorWho to the audience.

“Many of them have become good friends and I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

“The fans of Doctor Who are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I’ve never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable.”
