The Scots Magazine

MAY already… I can’t believe I’m writing the welcome letter to the fifth Scots Magazine of 2019. This year seems to be flying by particularly quickly. I think my Grampa was right when he told me time passes more quickly the older you get.

I also reckon time passes quicker for those working in journalism, as you’re always looking toward your next deadline. It’s especially quick on a monthly magazine… by the time you read this, in my head I’ll be finished with June and probably be half way through July!

So, with the feeling that the year’s rushing away from me, I’ve decided this month I’m going to make more of an effort to live in the moment.

It’s a call I made after climbing a Corbett – a mountain between 2599 and 2999ft (762 and 914 metres) – called Mam na Gualainn, at Kinlochleven recently.

The long summit ridge would be a nice walk in good weather. When we were there, however, conditions were vicious. A constant, howling icy wind drove rain and hail so hard that it felt like being pelted by wee stones.

The incessant blast made it almost impossible to stand.

All I could concentrate on was staying upright. Then, as soon as we crested the top and lost a bit of height, we were sheltered and the wind dropped.

It meant we could, finally, take in our surroundings. Magnificent scenery extended into the wilds of Ardgour. It was great to stop and simply admire the view, above.

It’s something I’m trying to take into my everyday life – and your favourite magazine gives the perfect opportunity to do just that.

This month, we publish the 15 finalists of our 2019 Photographer of the Year competition. Over eight glorious pages, we bring you the cream of this year’s selection.

It’s an ideal chance to pour a cuppa, relax and appreciate some truly incredible imagery. There’s stunning landscapes, vibrant urban scenes and wonderful wildlife.

Whittling down the many hundreds of entries to a handful of finalists was not easy for our team. I’m just glad I don’t have to pick a winner – that’s up to you. Turn to page 86 for more details.
