Home stars snap up mixed pairs success

Hunmanby duo Watson and Thompson shine at Sands Lane

With an entry of 80 players, Hunmanby BC’s mixed pairs merit competitio­n turned into an 11-hour marathon, fortunatel­y Sunday’s weather was the best of the year so far.

An excellent playing surface added to the enjoyment with the fine, sunny weather a bonus until dusk.

At the quarter-finals stage Hunmanby’s own Frank and Jean Povey beat clubmates Phil and Lynne Todd 21-18, while Lisa Watson and Peter Thompson (both Hunmanby) beat Fran and Les Boyles (Dukes Park) 21-8.

Winning through the other quarters were Hunmanby’s Harry Old and Jenny Richards, 21-16 against Rita and Tony Bland (Borough), and Gary Puleston (Dukes Park) and Maureen Gill, 21-20 against Whitby’s Steve and Carol Dover.

Progressin­g to the final were Watson and Thomp- son, 21-12 against the Poveys, and Puleston and Gill, 21-14 against Old and Richards.

Home green knowledge proved to be of value to Watson and Thompson in the final and with five start on the card they scored two on the opening two ends for a 9-5 lead.

From that point they were never in arrears and after finally netting another two on the 14th end gained a well-deserved 21-13 victory over Puleston and Gill

The presentati­ons were made by Phil Todd on behalf of the sponsor, Scarboroug­h entreprene­ur Duncan Freer.

On Sunday there will be a singles merit at Dukes Park BC, Bridlingto­n, 9.30am start.

The finals of the indoor bowls centre winter cup competitio­ns are under way and the drawn fours final will be played from 6.30pm today and the mixed triples from 6pm tomorrow.

A busy weekend will see the ladies’ fours, the men’s four set singles and the junior handicap singles all start at 10am on Saturday with the mixed pairs following at 3pm.

While on Sunday there will be 10am starts for the ladies’ pairs, the men’s pairs and the 60-plus singles and 3pm starts for the junior singles and the ladies’ and men’s singles.

The May Festival, which attracts players from throughout Yorkshire’s crown green and indoor bowling territorie­s, will take place on the Alexandra Gardens greens and at the indoor bowls centre, from Sunday May 3 to Friday May 8.

As in previous years, there are prizes well worth winning. Entry forms are now available at the indoor centre.

The qualifying rounds for this year’s Gambart Baines Challenge Cup will begin on Bank Holiday Monday May 25, followed by Thursday May 28.

A Bank Holiday round will also be held on Monday August 24.

There will be a change from tradition in June, with the rounds being on Fridays, 5, 12, 19 and 26, before reverting to Thursdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, August 6, 13, 20 and 27 and September 3, 10 and 17, with the final played on Saturday September 19.

The entry fee is unchanged at £7. Car parking arrangemen­t for entrants are the same as last year, £1 per day in Victoria Park car park (excluding Bank Holidays and cricket match days).

Entries will be taken up to 9.30am on qualifying days when there will also be 9.3010am practice time for entrants, with 10am as scratch time for entrants.

Entry forms are now available for the Scarboroug­h Open Bowls Tournament which starts on Monday September 7 with the men’s and ladies singles.

The men’s and ladies’ pairs will follow on the Tuesday, the mixed pairs on Wednesday and the mixed triples on Thursday. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be staged on Friday.

All the early rounds will start at 9.30am with the finals to be held at South Cliff BC from 1.30pm on September 12.
