Lack of discipline costs struggling Fylde

- ■ By ALLAN FOSTER

A RED card for replacement prop Jake Pope proved crucial as Caldy secured a bonus-point win over Fylde.

Pope was sent from the field with the hosts trailing by five points but a penalty try and a Ben Jones score gave Caldy a comfortable winning scoreline.

After Derek Salisbury’s early score for Caldy, converted by Gavin Roberts, Fylde were on top.

Caldy’s indiscipline was punished as fly-half Alex Dolly knocked over three penalties to give his side a 9-7 lead.

But fly-half Rhys Hayes weaved his way through the Fylde defence for a vital score just before half-time.

Roberts again added the extras as the visitors went into the break with a narrow five-point lead.

Flyde should have closed that gap but replacement Greg Smith and Dolly missed three penalties between them and it proved costly.

With Pope shown a red card for foul play, Caldy took full advantage with Roberts kicking six points to put them 20-9 ahead on the hour.

A dominant rolling maul, with Fylde a man down, saw Caldy awarded a penalty try on 70 minutes and when Connor Wilkinson was shown a yellow card the hosts were down to 13 men.

Delwyn John Jones went over in the final play of the game to wrap up the full five points for Caldy.

The win leaves them tenth in the table.
