Heathcote: We’ve found ways to give Wasps some problems

- ■ By NICK VERDIER

WORCESTER fly-half Tom Heathcote admits high-flying Wasps are far from the dream opponents for a team in need of a confidence boost following their 35-8 defeat to Newcastle last week.

The Warriors kicked off their Premiership campaign with that heavy defeat at Kingston Park but Heathcote is adamant his side were a lot better than the scoreline suggested.

And ahead of their first home game of the season he has called for more of the same, plus a little more accuracy, as they host last season’s finalists who picked up where they left off with an emphatic attacking display to beat Sale 50-35.

“We were disappointed by the result last week but if you look at the stats we were a lot closer to Newcastle than it appeared,” Heathcote said. “Our set piece success was right up there and we only conceded six penalties.

“We were right in the game at the start of the second half but we just made a few errors after that and the game slipped away from us as Newcastle took their chances really well.

“Wasps are one of the best teams in the league and we’re desperate to put things right. We’ve been working a lot on our defence to cope with their attack.

“From our side of things we’ve identified a few things we think can cause them problems. I never thought we were out of the game last week. We created chances but we just couldn't score.

“We’ll have to do that again against Wasps but we’ll have to make sure we’re more patient and accurate when it comes to getting over the line.

“We want to put a smile on our fans with a good performance and repay the ones who made the trip up to Kingston Park.”

It has been a troublesome week at Sixways with the board confirming the club were looking for fresh investors on Monday before Ed Griffiths left his consultancy role on Tuesday after his takeover proposition was turned down.

Heathcote added: “As players, we’re just trying to focus on what we have to do on the pitch. It’s not for us to worry about what’s going on off the field.

“What happens off the pitch is out of our hands. We’ve been made aware of the situation but putting in an improved performance against Wasps has been our sole focus.”
