Sense of perspective despite disappointment
Scotland international Cameron Strachan hopes the crosscountry season is able to get under way in October – but despite being desperate to compete, the Metro Aberdeen man is going to give the first month or two a miss.
He said: “My wife Becky is pregnant and our baby is due at the end of September.
“I’m obviously really excited about that and I will not be racing around that time even if the season is able to get under way.
“But I hope to keep going with my training and then hopefully get back into some of the December races.
“We’ll have to see what happens when the baby arrives.
“Ideally, and with a bit of luck, there might be some races of some description before the end of September which I can fit in. If not, it’s not a major problem.
“The guys at Metro Aberdeen are looking into the possibility of putting on a 5K or a 10K run of some description but I think it would be fairly low key and only for club members.
“There are virtual races around but it’s not something that excites me.
“I did one or two at the beginning of lockdown but it was such an effort. I found it really difficult to do a race on my own. It’s just not the same at all.
“It’s disappointing missing the whole summer of competition but I have to remember that for me it’s just a hobby.
“It must be far worse for fulltime athletes like Banchory’s Robbie Simpson as it’s his whole life, his profession.”
