BUCKIE TREBLE TONIC

Forres swept away as Linzee Gordon Park side add league title to honours list

- BY DAVE EDWARDS

Buckie completed a North of Scotland Cricket Association treble at Linzee Gordon Park on Saturday when they added the league title to their earlier League Cup and T20 triumphs.

The home side swept to the title in style when they inserted fellow championship contenders Forres St Lawrence and blew them away for just 50. Joe Haugh took three for 10, while all-rounder Jonny Corsie claimed three for 14 and Barry Newlands three for 15.

In reply, Buckie made 52 for one to capture the silverware with ease. Indian bowler Asim Ali led the charge with a knock of 34 not-out.

Buckie captain Daniel Walls was delighted with the way his side claimed the title. He said: “This is a massive achievement for everyone at Buckie Cricket Club. I won the toss, the first time I’ve won it in the last five games, and put Forres in to bat on our grass wicket. The pitch was a wee bit damp to start with so it was a bit of a no-brainer to put them in first and see how they got on. At one point we really had them on the ropes at eight for five. The damage was done and although they recovered slightly we managed to bowl them out for 50. For the second week in a row Barry Newlands ripped through the top order,

“I think this result shows just how good a team we are”

just like he did in last weekend’s cup final against Forres at Huntly.

Buckie bowler Joe Hough said: “I think this result shows just how good a team we are. We had to stop Forres reaching 75 runs, if they had they would have made it harder for us to lift the title. In the end each and every one of us put our hand up and contributed to a wonderful result and it goes without saying that we’ve got a great team spirit at the club.”

Buckie’s long-serving president Eadie Walls, uncle of skipper Daniel, said: “It really has been a great team effort. We have had a decent pool of 16 to 17 players and we’ve very much needed them all over the course of the season.

“We’ve had a lot of close games and in the end we’ve had so many memorable moments.

“Our bowlers have more than played their part at the top of the innings. They’ve given us a platform but everybody has played their part in clinching this remarkable treble.”
