Dundee United attacker Simon Murray hopes to provide his mum with the perfect Mother’s Day gift thisweeken­d – his cupwinner’s medal.

It’s not that the United forward has anything against the traditiona­l flowers and chocolates and he knows a bouquet of roses tomorrow would be just fine.

However, Murray knows his mum Paula would prefer her gift to be his winner’s medal after Arabs play St Mirren in the IRN- BRU Cup final at Motherwell’s Fir Park today (12.30pm).

The Murray clan will be well represente­d and hope it willbethum­bs-upforRay McKinnon’s men at fulltime and then back home for a knees-up.

United supporters – and they are meeting at her house in the morning, travelling down on the bus and then going back for what they hope will be a party at night. I hope to join them all later and maybe I will have a wee medal to show them.

“We have a game on Tuesday againstAyr­United so I won’t be celebratin­g too much but it should be a good night as long as we win.

“I can give my mum my medal and a card for Mother’s Day on Sunday – there’s an idea.

“That would be better than some flowers.”

Murray has always benefited from the backing of his family and today will be no different.

He added: “It will be great for me to know that I have all that support.

“My mum, dad and grandad try to go to every game I play. I thinkmy dad Gary has been at every one, going back to when I was playing for Arbroath.”
