Hawkins sets new Scottish record

Kilbarchan’s Callum Hawkins smashed the national half marathon record when winning the Great Scottish Run inGlasgow and became the first men’s home winner of the race for 33 years.

The Olympic marathon runner clocked 1hr 24sec to win from Glasgow 2014 Commonweal­th 10,000m champion, Uganda’sMoses Kipsiro, with a personal best that takes him second to Mo Farah on the British all-time list.

It was also a course record as the 24-year-old Scot eclipsed the 1:01:09 run by Haile Gebrselass­ie three years agoandbeca­me the first Scottish winner since Peter Fleming in 1983, when the race was a full marathon.

Kipsiro was second in 1:00:54 with Kenyan Joel Kimutai third in 1:01:34.

Hawkins eclipsed the Scottish record and successful­ly defended his Scottish half marathon title, with Glasgow’s Beth Potter doing the same with a 1:12:07 personal best in the women’s race.

There were Scottish medals for Shettlesto­n’s Tewolde Mengisteab in 1:04:23 and a bronze for Fife AC’s Andrew Lemoncello 1:05:49.

Aberdeen AAC’s Will Mackaywas 12th in 1:07:52 while Kenny Wilson (Moray RoadRunner­s) was 13th in 1:08:09.

Potter took the Scottish women’s gold in a time of 1:12:07 and the silver went to Fionnuala Ross of Shettlesto­n with 1:14:17 and third to Kilbarchan’s Gemma Rankin in 1:15:18. The race was won by Kenya’s Betsy Saina in 1:07:22.

Sarah Liebnitz (Inverness Harriers) was 15th in 1:18:52 and Fiona Brian (Metro Aberdeen) 17th in 1:19:42.

Welsh athlete Jonathan Hopkinswon­theaccompa­nying 10km race in 30:21 from Ben Stevenson of Falkirk Vics (30:38), with Ryan Thomson of Cambuslang taking third in 31:08. Stephen Mackay (Inverness Harriers) was 10th in 33:25. Glasgow’s Josephine Moultrie won the women’s race in 34:22 with titleholde­r Jenny Bannerman (Inverness Harriers) second in 35:26.
