SIR, – You published a report (September 7) concerning land needed for the Inverness West Link road. Your readers will be well aware of the campaign for one cut and cover to form the link at Torvean quarry instead of two bridges downstream.

In your report, you quoted a council spokesman saying: “The council had looked at more than 80 different options for the new road and ruled out a tunnel following a detailed environmen­tal and technical assessment.”

In fact, the only tunnel plan which the council looked at was for a bored tunnel beside the canal bridge at Millerton, which was ruled out because of the great extra cost of building a bridge over the Ness.
