dining areas. Step outside and the extensive manicured grounds, along with woodlands, lawns and the walled garden, are the perfect playground for little ones or adults looking to relax and merely bask in the sun. If you love outdoor pursuits such as hunting or shooting, that can be arranged on the estate too.

You could easily spend your whole experience within the confines of Balnakeilly House, but when you do venture further afield, you can enjoy some drinks alfresco at the nearby Moulin Inn. Established in 1695, it’s cosy and traditional inside with an impressive range of beers and ales thanks to its on-site micro-brewery. The multi-award-winning East Haugh House Hotel and Restaurant is also worth a visit for fine dining at affordable prices.

Or you could (and should) take a trip into town and meander around Pitlochry. It’s the type of place that oozes that feel-good, holiday vibe. Full of restaurants, coffee bars and gift shops, take a pit stop at the family-owned Old Mill Inn if you’re feeling overwhelmed by choice. Relaxed and laid back, it’s renowned for fresh, local produce and I’d highly recommend the tureen of Chunky Cullen Skink, which is creamy, delicious and full of meaty, flavoursome fish.

If you’re a whisky lover – or novice for that matter – be sure to walk down to the Blair Atholl Distillery when you’re in town, one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland, and enjoy a dram at the mash tun bar. There is also the Edradour Distillery, the smallest traditional distillery in Scotland, and it’s just a short drive from Balnakeilly, so add it to your hit list during your stay too.

A beautiful, atmospheric retreat that combines the luxury of a boutique hotel with the comfort and charm of country living, Balnakeilly House is the perfect spot for a family get-together, party or special occasion, and with it being so easily accessible from large parts of the country, what’s not to love?
