- BY NICK HUMPHREYS

Fins have been flapping in excitement for the reopening of a city animal park after a £750,000 revamp.

Hazlehead Park Pets’ Corner has had new fish and reptile tanks installed as well as new roof, toilet facilities and internal alterations.

Staff facilities have also been upgraded and new access ramps and paths have been installed.

Youngsters from Hazlehead Primary School got a sneak peak of the refurbished park before it reopens to the public tomorrow. A new education room will also soon be open.

Barbara Jones, vicechairwoman of Friends of Hazlehead Park, hopes visitors will flock to the centre to see the work that has been done. She said: “The refurbished and extended Pets’ Corner will be a boost to the park as it really cements it as a fantastic facility for all the family to visit.

“We’re really delighted Pets’ Corner is reopening on Saturday and would encourage everyone to come along over the summer and see for themselves how good the revamp is.”

Councillor Yvonne Allan, the city council’s communities, housing and infrastructure convener, said the pupils enjoyed their trip. She added: “It was fantastic to see how excited the pupils were at the new aquarium and reptile section. It’s a really exciting place to go for children and adults in all weathers so I’m sure it will be popular over the summer holidays.”

Animal attractions at Pets’ Corner include alpacas, Kunekune pigs, miniature donkeys, fish and reptiles. Other popular animals include a pygmy goat named Gethin, who arrived last July, geese, chickens, sheep, budgies, ducks and rabbits.

The summer opening hours for Pets’ Corner until September are every day from 10am to 5.30pm. Entry £3 for over 16s, £1 for children aged three to 16 and free for youngsters under three.
