Gill delivers a classy display, but he will be even better next time
Boxing - Winning return by Chatteris man
Chatteris puncher Jordan Gill outclassed Reece Bellotti in their big ‘Fight Camp’ scrap in front of the Sky TV cameras last weekend, but the 26 year-old insists he is capable of delivering a much better performance.
Gill won a unanimous points verdict in the back garden of promoter Eddie Hearn’s Essex mansion to land pre-fight odds of 1/4 after dominating the bout behind a precise left jab.
It was a fine comeback after a tough year which included a health scare and the first loss of his professional career.
“It was a great fight,” Gill stated. “But I expected to deliver a better performance.
“I boxed to orders. We worked on just doing enough to nick a lot of rounds and in that respect it worked well.
“I shook off a lot of rust out there and managed to beat a game and strong opponent.
“A win’s a win though and as it was a must-win fight for me I have to be happy.
“I controlled the fight with my left hand. I barely threw a right hand, but I did what I was told.
“It’s hard not to go through the gears, but Reece brought his A game and fought well, and you have to be wary of his power.
“I wasn’t scared of it, but I was in control doing what I was doing and and I didn’t want to let that go. I used boxing ‘smarts’ against a dangerous opponent.
“I will be better in the future and I want to make up for lost time now.
“I want to go beyond British titles as I fight best against the best. I’ll take on all those above me and I’ll take on the 50/50 fights. I’m not scared of anyone out there.
“It was an amazingly surreal moment being involved in the first live fight since lockdown, but it felt like a big occasion and I hope we entertained the viewers.
“I’ll box in Eddie’s back garden anytime!”
Gill is a former Commonwealth featherweight champion and his professional record now reads 25 wins and one defeat in 26 fights.
