Family friendly enjoyment to be had

-

It is due to be a busy few weeks for Peterborough Music Hub, with a terrific run of live music events planned for young people - and for their families and friends to enjoy too throughout March.

The Cresset plays host to another Big Sing workshop, delivered in partnership with Peterborough Sings, this time featuring music from The Beatles (today and tomorrow). This is followed by this year’s Banding Together project, led by Greg Arrowsmith and delivered with five Peterborough Secondary Schools. The project concludes with a performance at the Salvation Hall in Millfield on March 6.

Later this month - March 19 - the team delivers its Spring Whole Class Music Concert and another of its hugely popular SEND Sing-a-long events. The action-packed day concludes with the Hub’s third Schools Make Music Concert - including a full programme of music from schools across the city.

St John’s Church in Cathedral Square has begun its 2020 Tuesdays Til Two series of concerts. March includes Gus Orchard – Organ (10th), Krassmira Jeliazkova-Jones and Elizabeth Mucha - Violin and Piano (17 th ) and Valentin Schiedermair – Piano (24 th ).

Meanwhile the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra present their Spring Concert on March 28. The superb bill features Vaughan Williams, Elgar and a new commission of Martin Bright’s Apkallu: Protector, composed for the Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians Percussion Ensemble. The Concert, at The Queen Katharine Academy, starts at 7.30pm - but there’s a preconcert talk at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from www. ticketsource.co.uk/cpso or on 01733 452336.

The venue’s Ballroom also hosts Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham on March 27 at 7.30pm. The duo has toured together since 1986 to packed concert halls all over the world and won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – Best Duo Award.

There’s music too with Stamford Art Centre’s Mini Mondays Music Concerts. These events, held in the Ballroom, are a perfect introduction to music for the under-5s. The performance on March 23, starting at 12.30pm, features flute and harp with Lisa Nelson and Eleanor Turner. Tickets are just £3 adults and £2 for children.

The town’s music programme for young people is also served by Stamford Chamber Orchestra, with Paddington’s First Concert on March 21 at 6.30pm at Barn Hill Methodist Church. This children’s concert promises fun for all the family - music will include Jupiter by Holst, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 by Elgar, Morning by Grieg and further items by the SCO Children’s Choir.

With lots of family friendly music to enjoy this month there’s no excuse not to find a great treat for Mothe’s Day on March 22.

As always, make time for some live music this month.
