‘Get me to the play-offs and I’ll do the rest’

-

“Get me to the play-offs and I’ll do the rest,” boasted Steve Evans after a first defeat in his Posh managerial career.

Evans’ self-confidence and belief in his playing squad hasn’t been damaged by a disappointing 2-1 loss at Oxford last Saturday.

Posh have nine games remaining to bridge a one-point gap to the play-off places, but their remaining away matches are against current top two Blackburn and Shrewsbury as well as Rotherham (third), Plymouth (sixth) and Portsmouth (eighth).

“If the players can just get us into the play-offs,I will do the rest,” Evans insisted.

“Looking at the other teams in the top six, I wouldn’t worry about facing any of them in a two-legged tie. Getting to the play-offs will be harder than winning them.

“We’ve inherited an imbalance of away games to home games which makes things a little bit more difficult, but we shouldn’t worry too much about our remaining fixtures.

“We have the ability to match anyone on our day. We also have the desire.”

Posh host Bristol Rovers on Saturday in the first of four remaining home matches.

The other three games are against teams currently close to the drop zone, Northampton, Fleetwood and Rochdale.

“Games against teams fighting for survival are not necessarily the ones you would choose towards the end of a season,” Evans added.

“But we will make good plans and we will concentrate on what we have to do rather than worry about what our opponents are up to.

“It’s going to be an exciting end to the season and it’s great to be in the thick of it.”
