Anglian Water technicians will meet with Serpentine Green staff over the sewage stink at the shopping centre.

Shoppers visiting the Hampton centre have complained of a smell of sewage while visiting for a number of years.

Now work is being carried out to finally fix the problem and make shopping more pleasant for visitors.

Last week Roy Proud raised the issue on Twitter, and said: “When is something going to be done about the stench at the Serpentine Green ( #SepticTankGreen ) Shopping Centre?

“Coming in the other day via the North entrance by the new @marksandspencer Food Hall the smell was appalling.”

Lesley (@lifes_a_cake) replied: “An on-going issue for about the last 10 years at least!”

A spokesman for Serpentine Green said they were working with Anglian Water to tackle the problem.

The spokesman said: “Centre management have confirmed we are working with drainage companies and Anglian Water to identify the problem to resolve this.

“We hope that this will be resolved soon.”

A spokesman for Tesco, the largest store in the centre, apologised for the smell and said: “Good Morning Roy, I’m so sorry about this. I’m so sorry about this.

“I can totally understand how unenjoyable this would make your shopping experience.

“I have spoke with the Tesco Duty Manager and he has confirmed that this is an ongoing issue which the Shopping Centre owners are aware of.”

A spokesman for Anglian Water said they had been to the centre to examine the problem.

The spokesman said: “We sent a technician out to have a look at the centre, and they checked the sewers. The problemappearstobecomingfrom the centre’s own pumping station, which is their responsibility. We will be meeting with staff from Serpentine Green to sort out the issue.”

Serpentine Green was first opened in 1999, and a major expansion and upgrade was finished last year.
