Disabled people who receive either the higher rate mobility component of the disability living allowance, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of personal i ndependence payment, the war pensioners’ mobility supplement or the Armed Forces independence payment can exchange their weekly mobility payment to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme.

There are three pricing bands available for those looking to lease a car:

Cars that cost less than the mobility allowance – more than 150 cars are available which cost l ess than the weekly mobility allowance. These cars are available to lease at a fixed weekly amount for the whole of the agreement, meaning the remainder of the allowance, including any increases, will be paid directly to the customer by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Cars that cost the same as the mobility allowance – customers simply exchange their weekly mobility allowance, including any annual increases from the DWP, for the car of their choice.

Cars that cost all of the mobility allowance and also have an advance payment – customers can i ncrease their choice of cars by paying a non-refundable and upfront payment known as the advance payment. This covers the difference between the allowance amount and the total cost of the lease.

Regardless of which car i s chosen, all Motability Scheme customers enjoy the same worry- free package, including insurance, breakdown cover, servicing, tyres and glass replacement.

Motability Operations chief executive Mike Betts said: “Featuring more than 2,600 models, our autumn price l i st offers disabled people a great range of cars to choose from, to suit their individual needs.

“We’re committed to providing a worry-free motoring experience which is why all customers on the Motability scheme can have complete peace of mind when driving this autumn.”

There a r e a l s o more than 500 wheelchair accessible vehicles available to lease through the Motability scheme, and more than 400 vehicle adaptations to choose from, with over 150 at no additional cost.
