Away win for Oban Lorne after stuttering start

-

Oban Lorne RFC continued their winning start to the 2021/22 West Region Division 2 season with a gritty away win at Dalziel, writes Fiona Scott.

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic issues and it took the visitors a while to get their motors running, with Dalziel scoring from a try and a penalty in the opening half hour.

Oban managed to climb the gears in the remainder of the first half, however, and some great handling led to tries by Robert McLaughlin and Kenny Grey, the latter converted by Vasil Borisov, to give the visitors a 12-8 lead going into the interval.

The hosts tried to apply pressure after the restart but once again the response from Oban was strong and a well worked try from Jethro Anderson increased the margin.

Dalziel notched a second penalty to reduce the deficit when the visitors were found to be slightly offside but Oban came back once more with some great teamwork in the middle of a park.

Desperate to close the gap further the oppositions discipline began to drop and Oban took full advantage. A fantastic kick by Borisov saw the visitors down to the Dalziel 25 and a penalty goal by the same man stretched the lead further.

Dalziel managed to slip through the Oban defence to touch down in the closing stages but the visitors held on for a fantastic 20-16 away win.

Head coach Corrie Lowe was delighted with the performance and the positivity the team are showing but admitted there are still things he would like to work on with the team.

Oban are on the road again this weekend when they travel to play Wigtownshire.
