EAGLES STAY IN THE HUNT

- By Roger Worsley

BEDFORD Town kept up their play-off push with a late 2-1 win against

North Leigh at the Eyrie. The visitors took the lead on 28 minutes when George Seacole outpaced the Bedford defence to slot the ball past the advancing Ashlee Jones.

Bedford equalised nine minutes later when a freekick was floated over from the left corner of the area, and Joe Steele rose to power a header into the net.

Bedford had a good proportion of the second half, but came up against a determined defence and an inspired Eddie Cavanagh in goal.

The winner came, ironically through a Cavanagh mistake as he dropped a catch, and Ben Ford evaded him to fire the ball home from just inside the area.

Elsewhere, Sutton Coldfield Town are going to need to create more chances and take them if they are going to stay in the mix for playoff places at the end of the season.

Draws mixed in with the occasion defeat are not playoff material.

So this 1-1 draw with bottom half of the table Welwyn Garden City was not what was needed.

An attack right from the kick-off ended with a long throw headed into the safe arms of the Welwyn keepers arms by James Hurst.

A sustained period of pressure from Sutton ended with two desperate clearances by the Welwyn defence.

And it ended with a corner, which James Beresford headed over the ball.

The half ended with Sutton well on top but unable to convert their pressure into goals.

Welwyn had a succession of three corners and on the third one Eusebio Da Silva rose above the defence to head home in the far corner.

Sutton threw everything at Welwyn and they were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute when Ben George was pulled down in the box.

Ryan Nesbitt stepped up and cooly slotted the penalty to earn a draw.

Corby Town cemented their place in the play-off

places with a 3-1 win away at Kempston Rovers.

Corby scored the first goal after 15 minutes when Stephen Diggin finished well to put them on the front foot.

Shortly before half time, Corby doubled their lead when Joel Carter made it 2-0.

Kempston were back in the game early in the second half when Scott Joseph halved the deficit.

Elliot Sandy made sure of the points for Corby when he scored from the penalty spot just after the hour.

The result leaves Corby in third but are seven points off top of the table Bromsgrove Sports with three games in hand.

Thame United boosted their goal difference as they bid to stay in the play-off places with a 5-0 win over Dunstable Town.

Aaron Jewell got the game off to a perfect start with a goal after just three minutes.

Ben Sturgess then made no mistake from the penalty spot on 17 minutes to double the lead.

Just before half time it was 3-0 as Liam Tack made the game far more comfortable with his goal.

The second half saw Thame add two more goals through Jewell who bagged his second of the game and then Dan West put the cherry on the cake in the dying minutes.

Goals from Daniel Cotton and Matt Sparrow gave Yaxley a 2-1 win over Berkhamsted.

The result is a blow for Berkhamsted who sit just outside the playoff places and concede ground on the top five.

A stoppage-time strike from Aaron Berry rescued a point for Aylesbury United in a 1-1 draw with Cambridge City.

Andre Olukanmi put Cambridge ahead early in the first half and it looked like the points were heading back with the away tea,

But with the clock ticking down, Berry fired the ball through a crowded penalty area to rescue a point.
