ICE-COOL MILLS IS SO DEADLY

- By Ken Hawkings

SHARP-SHOOTER John Mills scored a penalty deep into stoppage time to earn victory for Hereford and leave Sutton Coldfield Town heartbroken.

With a replay looking certain, the Bulls were awarded a penalty – which no one in the ground appeared to know what for except the referee – in the fourth minute of added time and Mills kept his cool to bag the winner and his second of the afternoon.

The first half was a fairly even affair but it was Sutton who almost made a dream start. Phil Trainer hit a screamer in the second minute that rattled the crossbar.

Sutton began to play some fast, flowing football and it took a good save from Alex Harris in the Hereford goal to stop a crisp volley from Luke Rodgers finding the net.

Sutton took the lead in the 39th minute when a long clearance down the middle was excellently controlled by Ryan Edmunds and he lobbed the keeper to open the scoring.

But they could not hold on to the lead. Three minutes later Hereford opened up the Sutton defence and Mills had the simple task of tapping the ball home.

Hereford began the second half in a rush. Within two minutes they went ahead when a mix-up in the Sutton defence allowed Mike Symons to cut in and give James Wren no chance.

Sutton were on the back foot but stuck to their task. It was no more than they deserved when a free-kick from the right was floated in and Trainer rose above the defence to steer the ball home on 86 minutes. But then came the late drama. STAR MAN: John Mills (Hereford) ENTERTAINMENT:
