Golden gloves Garson sends Vale out of cup

- BY DANNY CARO

BARRY GOLDSTEIN TROPHY QUARTER-FINAL HERTSWOOD VALE 1 FAITHFOLD B 1 (FAITHFOLD WON 8-7 ON PENALTIES)

DAVID GARSON was the hero of the hour after producing two one-handed saves in the penalty shoot-out to send Faithfold into the last four of the Barry Goldstein Trophy. Vale made a dream start when striker Elio Elia pounced on a defensive error to open the scoring. Faithfold gradually got a foothold and they started to control the midfield. They drew level with their only shot on target in the first half, a long-range freekick from Chaim Bordon — maintaining his impressive goal-a-game record and 17th strike of the season. Vale wasted numerous chances to regain the lead, while Faithfold also threatened, with Alex Trup and Ashley Hirschberger rescuing Vale with heroic last-ditch tackles. A marathon penalty shoot-out followed in the snow. Vale no. 1 Joni Hirschowitz made a fine save but Garson came to the fore, pulling off two fine stops to send Faithfold into the semi-finals. A Faithfold spokesman commented: “It was a deserved victory and a fantastic performance all round by the boys in green.” Vale joint-manager Jacob Emanuel remarked: “We were on top for the last 20 minutes but with only 11 players available, and a number of key players missing, we never really got the second goal that we deserved on the balance of play. Overall, it was disappointing but I felt we never really turned up due to the Arctic conditions.”

MGBSFL DIVISION TWO FC TEAM 7 CATFORD & BROMLEY 0

CENTRE-HALF ROB Sanford was the hat-trick hero as FC Team returned to winning ways with a crushing triumph over Catford. There were also goals from Richard Salmon, Marc Hecht, Adam Rones and leading marksman Mitch Young as FC Team secured their 11th league win. Player-manager Mitch Young commented: “I was delighted with the performance considering the conditions. We attacked with fluidity and to score seven goals was very pleasing.” Commenting on the match-winning efforts of Sanford, Young added: “Rob’s experience at the back was crucial, as was his goal-threat from set-pieces. His appearance was very welcome going into the final few games of the season. This was a great preparation for our forthcoming cup quarter-final and we are looking forward to pitting our wits against BGT favourites Bayern Mincha.”
