Comeback comedown as rivals move out of sight

-

ALLOA endured a bittersweet day as they salvaged a 2-2 draw against Ayr United at Recreation Park to stretch their unbeaten home record.

It took a last- minute header from Ben Gordon to earn them a point in an incident-packed match and complete their comeback from 2-0 down.

Ayr looked lively from the start with Michael Moffat testing Scott Bain and they took the lead nine minutes from the break.

David Sinclair set up Liam Buchanan and he celebrated his first goal for the club after returning to Scottish football following a spell in Ireland.

Sinclair supplied the cross for Neil McGregor to head Ayr’s second goal early in the second half, but Alloa pulled a goal back through Mitch Megginson.

It all turned sour for Buchanan when he picked up two bookings in quick succession to leave his team short on bodies. Gordon provided t he equaliser t en minutes later.

Any joy at securing the point was tempered by the fact that Queen of the South extended their advantage at the top to 18 points with a 2-1 home win over Stenhousemuir.

Derek Young gave them the lead midway through the first half when he volleyed home from Chris Mitchell’s pass.

Mitchell curled home t he second on the stroke of half-time before Stenhousemuir pulled a goal back through Mark Corcoran as the second half opened.

A double from Chris Templeman earned Forfar three points in a 2-1 win over East Fife at New Bayview. The striker put his side ahead with a left- foot strike in the 33rd minute after good work from Ross Campbell.

Gavin Malin almost scored a second before the break, but saw his shot come back off the post.

Templeman doubled Forfar’s advantage in the 71st minute, but East Fife ensured a nervous finish when Scott McBride converted a penalty with two minutes left.

Colin Hamilton scored the only goal as Arbroath edged Albion Rovers 1-0 away from home.

David Crawford almost put the home side in front, but his effort was tipped over by Scott Morrison and it was left to Hamilton to provide the only goal ten minutes from half time. Arbroath were denied a second when Rovers’ Ryan Scully saved a last-minute penalty from Euan Smith.
