More aid for vulnerable as helpline is launched

- By Tom Gordon

A NEW helpline is being launched today to bring essential support to elderly and vulnerable people at risk of falling through the cracks in the coronavirus crisis.

Nicola Sturgeon said the service would help those facing significant challenges as a result of Covid-19, but who were not in the highest priority “shielding group”.

The service will offer help to those who lack family or existing community support and cannot get online, and who are over 70, disabled, require mental health services, are pregnant or receive a flu jab for health reasons.

The 0800 111 4000 helpline will initially operate 9am to 5pm, with extended hours planned.

Callers will be automatically connected to their local council for help with essential food and medication, social work services for vulnerable children or adults, emotional support, and contact with local volunteer groups.

Tory Chancellor Rishi Sunak yesterday raised the coronavirus emergency response fund, with an additional £600 million going to Holyrood via the Barnett formula.

The Scottish Government urged charities to apply to its £50m “wellbeing fund” under a separate scheme, which has £33m left after helping 2,000 charities and third sector groups working with people affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Scottish Tories said the new helpline service did not make up for Scottish Government failings.

Leader Jackson Carlaw said: “The priority for some time now should have been to provide supermarkets with the list of shielded people so they can prioritise delivery slots.”
