Murder police quiz dozens to seek fire clues

Drivers and passers-by stopped near scene a week on

- HANNAH RODGER NEWS REPORTER

DOZENS of people have been questioned by murder detectives investigating a fatal fire on New Year’s Day.

About 55 people were stopped in Milngavie yesterday morning by officers attempting to find out more about the blaze which claimed the life of 23-year-old Cameron Logan.

Mr Logan’s 24-year-old girlfriend Rebecca Williams is still in a serious but stable condition in hospital following the fire at Achray Place on January 1, while his parents, both 54, have been discharged.

She had been in a critical condition but doctors said she had made a slight improvement.

Earlier this week Ms William’s father Phil took to social media to thank people for their support, and confirmed his daughter was “fighting hard”.

Officers visited the scene yesterday, exactly one week after the incident, and stopped passers-by between 6.30am and 8.30am in an attempt to gather more information about what happened.

They are treating the incident as murder and attempted murder, and say the fire was started deliberately.

They stopped 45 drivers, four dog walkers, five pedestrians and a jogger, who were around Achray Place yesterday morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Livingstone from the Major Investigation Team based at Govan Police Office said: “We will now assess any new information that could potentially assist with the investigation and help us catch the person responsible for this despicable crime.

“A number of potential witnesses have already come forward, including people who believe they may be the dog walkers mentioned in our previous appeals. However we still need to speak to anyone else who was in the area on New Year’s morning.

“Somebody deliberately set this fire, killing a young man and seriously injuring a young woman, and that person will have had to make their way from the scene in the immediate aftermath.

“If you were in the area around the time of the fire and have not spoken to police, please come forward. I cannot stress how important it is that we speak to every single person who was in the area, even if you don’t think you have any information, come forward and speak to us because even the smallest detail could make all the difference.”

DCI Livingstone said in particular he is trying to reach a man seen in the Craigton Wood area around 7.25am on January 1, who was walking a brown pitbull-type dog, as well as another man walking along Craigton Road on to the West Highland Way with two springer spaniels.

Along with the dog walkers, police want to talk to a man and woman who were jogging together on Craigton Road around 8.10am.

DCI Livingston added: “There is no suggestion that any of these people seen in the area around the time of the incident are responsible for the fire, but they could be potential witnesses and it is absolutely vital that we speak to them all as part of our ongoing inquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Investigation Team based at Govan Police Office on 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
