Brewers fight back as Stanley capitulate

- By James Taylor

BURTON boss Nigel Clough was not as surprised as many inside Pirelli Stadium as his side stormed back from 2-0 down to seal a comprehensive victory over Accrington Stanley.

Once they got level Albion ran away with the game, with two penalties from Lucas Akins sandwiching a fine strike from substitute David Templeton, as Albion made it back to back home wins.

“I thought we played well” said a very measured Clough, “We played well in the first 30-40 minutes and didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down, the goals came from two mistakes and lazy defending but the goal we got just before half-time was massively important, the timing of it.”

“We had 10 or 12 moves similar to the goal but didn’t get shots off and that was the only thing that was missing. In the second half we finished a couple off.

“We have played better in some other games here this season but the difference is we finished our chances off.”

Accrington boss John Coleman had no complaints about the defeat as he watched his side surrender the points from a winning position.

“It is very, very rare that I have seen one of my teams capitulate like we did but we have done and there is no getting away from it” said the disappointed Stanley boss.

“Burton fully deserved it. Maybe five flattered us a bit. Certainly going in 2-1 up at half time flattered us and they were better than us in the second half.”

“It is rare that I can say that we have been comprehensively outplayed but this was one of them days.” The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when Stanley skipper Sean McConville was on hand to benefit from Billy Kee’s knock down to fire the ball beyond Brad Collins in the Burton goal.

Collins was then guilty of conceding a penalty by bringing Jordan Clark down, allowing Kee to slot home his 15th goal of the season from the spot.

Scott Fraser, on his return to the side, got Albion back into it with a precise left foot shot a minute before the break.

Centre-back Kyle McFadzean produced the touch of a midfield playmaker after 68 minutes to equalise with a superb free kick after Stephen Quinn had been felled just outside the box, before Albion put the game out of the visitors reach.
