Brilliant Barry has Shrimpers on top

- By Chris Spittles

MORECAMBE had goalkeeper Barry Roche to thank for a string of outstanding saves as Kevin Ellison fired them to the top of League Two.

The Shrimps made it three wins from four games so far this season after Ellison blasted home the only goal of the game on 54 minutes.

But Jim Bentley’s side needed Roche’s heroics to clinch three points as he denied Matt Dolan, Kevin Dawson and Tom Eaves with a succession of brilliant stops.

Morecambe boss Bentley said: “It was a mad game.

“They’ve battered us for large periods but we’ve ridden our luck and come away with a victory.

“The hardest thing to do in football is to score a goal but we’ve managed to do that and in Kevin Ellison we’ve got someone who knows where the back of the net is.

“I know we’ve got top of the table but it doesn’t mean anything at the moment, it’s so early in the season.

“We are pleased with how things are going at the moment and we’ve beaten some good sides but this is football and you can’t be complacent.”

After winning their opening game against Notts County, Yeovil have now gone three matches without a win.

Boss Darren Way said: “We were very dominant in the first half and created a lot of good chances without finding that finishing touch but I’ll make sure the players keep believing.

“When we get spells in games when we’re on top we have to make sure we make it count in terms of goals and I always talk about having composure in front of goal.

“The players are giving me everything but we have to make sure we deal with games like this and get what we deserve from them.

“I was also disappointed with the way in which Morecambe scored their goal because we knew they would try to do that but our players will learn from that.”

Yeovil midfielder Alex Lawless headed a volley from Alex Whitmore off his own line as both sides threatened to score an early goal.

Yeovil saw Roche save an angled drive from Dawson before he then reacted well to keep out a deft flick from Eaves.

Morecambe went ahead after the break when Lee Molyneux spearheaded a quick break that ended with Ellison converting from ten yards.

Yeovil piled forward in search of an equaliser but found Roche in outstanding form, with his best save keeping out a low shot from Dolan.
