Barry’s a match for his Uncle Gareth...

- By Dan Sheldon

LUKE WILLIAMS was delighted with another home clean sheet – and insisted his Swindon side will only improve.

Bradley Barry rifled a shot into the top of the Port Vale net in the 47th minute which Vale goalkeeper Jak Alnwick could do nothing about to give Swindon victory.

The goal for Barry – Everton midfielder Gareth Barry’s nephew, who also scored yesterday – from Michael Doughty’s cross was his first at professional level.

Williams said:“The clean sheet was the most pleasing.

“We started very well and we knew exactly what we wanted from the team.

“We lost our way in the last 15 minutes of the first half which I’m really disappointed with and we need to improve upon that.

“We always felt we were in with a chance of winning the game. We wanted to press higher up the pitch but it wasn’t possible as our strikers weren’t fully fit, so we were too slow to press them.

“Barry deserved the goal, it has been coming a while. It’s great to have an extra threat from midfield and it gives us another option when it comes to scoring.”

Port Vale manager Bruno Ribeiro believed his side were better than Swindon but lacked a clinical edge in front of goal. They came into the game unbeaten and yet to concede a goal in the league but their excellent start was halted by a resilient Swindon performance, personified by defender Lloyd Jones. He made a last-ditch tackle to block what looked to be a certain goal from Port Vale striker JJ Hooper in the 33rd minute.

The Valiants failed to create any real chances after the break having dominated the first half, although Robins keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was called into action to make a fingertip save in the final minutes to ensure his side made it two victories from two at the County Ground.

Ribeiro said: “The first 15 minutes was not very good but the next half-hour was very good, we created three or four chances to score.

“At half-time I said to my team that we were going to win this game but we made one mistake and they scored and after that it was very difficult, but we have to keep working.

“We were much better than Swindon and could have scored two or three goals.

“My squad is strong but we need a goalscorer. We are defending very well but we are failing to score our chances and we need goals to win games.”
