SNP chief mocks England over defeat in Euros final

- By Simon Johnson Scottish political editor

THE SNP’S Westminster leader has posted a social media message mocking England’s Euro 2024 Final defeat against Spain.

Stephen Flynn tweeted a picture of himself wearing a Scotland top and a kilt while standing in front of the shirt of the star Spanish midfielder Rodri.

The Tartan Army ridiculed the Manchester City star over his furious reaction to Spain’s 2-0 qualifying defeat at Hampden in March last year. Rodri had said Scotland played “rubbish football” and accused its players of falling over to run down the clock.

Mr Flynn’s picture showed him appearing to mock Rodri by making a cry-baby gesture. However, in the message posted last night shortly after Spain beat England 2-1 in the final, Mr Flynn said: “Rodri. Bro. All is forgiven.”

Now the Aberdeen South MP has faced an angry response. Jamie Halcro Johnston, a Scottish Tory MSP, said: “We got humped 5-1 in our opening game, never looked likely to get out of the group, and choked in the last seconds of our last game. England got to the final. I’m all for sporting rivalry but this just looks a little pathetic.”

Scotland fans also weighed in on Mr Flynn’s comments, with one responding: “You are utterly pathetic, commiserations England.” Another posted a picture of an unhappy Nicola Sturgeon on ITV’S general election night panel, asking Mr Flynn: “Have you forgotten what a proper humping looks like?”

Although Mr Flynn managed to hold his constituency, the SNP lost 39 seats, winning only nine.

Ian Blackford, Mr Flynn’s predecessor as SNP Westminster leader, posted a mock video of an RAF flypast spelling out the message “It’s coming home”, only for the jets to return, this time spelling out the message “False alarm”.
