BEST WARDROBE AND STORAGE PROPS
Best hangers
Non-slip rubber ones from theorganisedhome.co.uk. If you want ones with clips for skirts and trousers, try rubber coated ones from totalwardrobecare.com. The grip is vice-like, which means no precious clothes slithering to the bottom of the wardrobe. It also means that delicate velvets and silk need protection. I place cotton handkerchiefs or cloth shoe bags on the outside of waistbands before fastening the hanger clips over them.
Best anti-moth guard
The moth rights activists won’t approve, but those sticky sheets from AF Demi Diamond (£9.75 for 5 strips and holders, amazon. co.uk) really do the trick. It’s ghoulish seeing all the little moth bodies (RIP) stuck to them. But, I won’t lie, it’s also satisfying. Pointless for sheep and goat to be shorn so that the moths can come along and ruin their bounty.
Best de-bobbler
The small wooden combs that you get free with purchase in smart emporia (Brora) or from Amazon for £2.53 usually do the trick. But for something matted and more bobble than jumper, you might prefer Steamery’s batteryfree Usb-chargeable one, which is around twice as powerful as anything else on the market (£40, steamery.co.uk).
Best wardrobe scenter
Neals Yard lavender essential oil (£9,50, nealsyardremedies.com). Dab it on a pine cone or one of those old cedar tiles you find in dry cleaners. If you’re packing clothes away and want them to smell enticing six months or a year down the line, the scent in Santa Maria Novella’s potpourris seems to last for years (their ceramic potpourri holders, from £20, make usefully lovely gifts, smnovella.com).
Best spacesaving tip
If you don’t have enough drawer space for your knitwear (which should always be laid flat, rather than hung up, to avoid it stretching), keep it in drawstring cloth bags and loop the ties over a hanger. Fix sturdy hooks to the backs of doors, the sides of wardrobes and anywhere else they won’t physically encumber your movement.
