TV surgeon sued by ‘infertile’ patients

A SURGEON from Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies is being sued by almost 60 patients after he allegedly left some infertile.

Manu Nair, who appears as an expert on the medical programme, is accused of treating male patients for prostate cancer when they did not have the disease.

One man said he was left impotent when the surgeon “cooked” his prostate gland using laser treatment which had not been approved by health watchdogs. He said: “My whole way of life has changed and being told that I can no longer have children is just soul-destroying.”

A total of 57 patients are taking legal action over prostate, bladder and kidney treatment they received both privately and on the NHS.

The cases involve treatment at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham and Spire Parkway private hospital in Solihull, West Midlands.

Dr Nair, a consultant urologist, left both hospitals and the General Medical Council placed restrictions on his practice.

Many of the patients treated by the surgeon in Birmingham had prostate cancer treatment or surgery.

Claims against the doctor include those from patients who underwent treatment, later to be told they never had cancer. In another case, a patient is alleged to have had a kidney needlessly removed.

Dozens of patients have instructed medical negligence lawyers to sue Dr Nair over claims they suffered serious health problems.

Adam Wright, the Irwin Mitchell solicitor leading the action said: “Sadly, the sanctions placed upon his practice by the GMC came too late in the day for the large number of patients already affected who appear to have suffered serious damage to their health.”
