SIR – I am amazed that so many companies and countries are clamouring for the services of Tony Blair (report, June 12), given his track record on Iraq. The longer term consequences of this continue to ricochet throughout the Middle East.

Many affected families here in Britain – war widows and the permanently injured – are piecing their lives back together on less income than Mr Blair and his entourage spend on a hotel for few nights.

Clive Foskett

Headley Down, Hampshire SIR – Mr Blair only receives such exorbitant fees because he was once prime minister of this country. It is time that he acknowledged this and started paying for his own security – at least when travelling abroad for his own commercial ends.

Tony Hill

Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire SIR – Mr Blair’s eight years as Middle East envoy will be remembered for three things: little progress towards a lasting settlement between Israel and Palestine, Gaza becoming the place with the highest unemployment level in the world and a considerable increase in his own wealth.

Michael Thomas

Uffington, Oxfordshire SIR – A variety of benefits are means tested in Britain. Why not the security costs of a former prime minister?

Bruce Clench

Chichester, West Sussex SIR – Mr Blair gave this country years of devoted service and has to live the rest of his life under constant protection.

Who in this world doesn’t use their contacts to get on in life?

Graham Sutherland

Chester SIR – Maybe we need more people like Mr Blair, who are prepared to engage at whatever level may be necessary and travel the world tirelessly in order to make their fortune. No doubt he pays his taxes.

John Penketh

Hayling Island, Hampshire SIR – When are we going to read the Chilcot Report to judge for ourselves the true cost of Mr Blair’s legacy?

Eve Wilson

Fareham, Hampshire SIR – There was initially widespread support in this country for an invasion to get rid of Saddam Hussein and for our participation in it. The United States would have invaded Iraq whether or not Britain was involved and the final outcome would, in all probability, have been the same.

David Langfield

Pyrford, Surrey SIR – Is Mr Blair’s protection squad there to protect him from the British public?

Robert Ward

Loughborough, Leicestershire
