Burton heap agony on Dyche

-

Sean Dyche can add Burton Albion to his list of embarrassments in a competition that has proved an annual irritant for the Burnley manager.

Dyche’s difficult start to the season continued after Jamie Allen’s 83rd-minute winner secured the League One club their first-ever place in the fourth round.

Burnley’s experiences in the League Cup under Dyche have not been memorable in recent years, with exits against Port Vale and Accrington Stanley. Lincoln also dumped them out of the FA Cup two seasons ago, and Burton are the latest to claim their scalp.

Dyche said: “This competition is the only one left to do well in during my time at Burnley, and it’s something we wanted to correct.

“It hasn’t got the same feeling as a Premier League game and often these things happen. It must be a mindset with the players as it’s certainly not quality. We prepared right and there was a good feeling, but we didn’t do well enough in front of their goal.”

Burnley did take the lead five minutes before the break, when defender Kevin Long headed in Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s corner from the left. But Burton responded brilliantly and equalised in the 62nd minute, after a swift counterattack ended with record £500,000 buy Liam Boyce driving a fierce shot past Tom Heaton.

Ashley Barnes, a Burnley substitute, struck a post, but the home team snatched the victory seven minutes from time when Allen poked the ball past Heaton to crown another speedy break.

It could have been worse for Dyche, too, with winger Jake Hesketh striking a post for Burton in added time.

Burton manager Nigel Clough said: “The mood in the dressing room is euphoric, as it should be. Hopefully in the next round we can get one of the big boys. For a club like us it’s all about glory, confidence – and money.”
