Man Marking Liverpool

-

Simon Mignolet

He was rarely tested and did everything required. Has a decent penalty-saving record but was not able to stop Rooney’s effort.

Jordan Henderson

A captain’s performance from the midfielder who made his presence felt in the centre of the park. Used the ball intelligently throughout.

Joe Gomez

Another solid and dependable showing from the young defender who seems to get better with each passing week. Composed throughout.

Alex Oxlade-chamberlain

A few nice touches but drifted in and out of the game. Maybe this was not quite the occasion for him to showcase his ability.

Dejan Lovren

Gave away a daft penalty as he needlessly shoved Calvertlewin to ground. The Croatian always seems to have this kind of moment of madness in him.

Mohamed Salah

The difference maker again. Industrious, creative and threatening. Goal capped a superb individual display. Strange decision to take him off.

Ragnar Klavan

After an uncertain start to life at Anfield the Estonian appears to have adjusted. A measured and disciplined showing overall.

Dominic Solanke

Handed a surprise start in attack and decided to keep it simple, which meant the youngster was never really able to leave his mark on the game.

Andrew Robertson

A rare start for the Scotland left-back. Defended solidly and showed a willingness to get forward and support Liverpool’s attacks whenever possible.

Sadio Mane

Not quite at his sparkling best but still managed to show flashes of quality. Should have passed the ball to a team-mate when through on goal.

James Milner

Cool head in the heat of the midfield derby battle as he provided some much-needed stability for Liverpool. Crosses caused problems.

Substitutes

Firmino (Salah, 67) Coutinho (Ox-ch’lain, 78) Ings (Solanke 80)

Not used Karius, Alexanderarnold, Can, Wijnaldum.
